The Dolphins were back at practice today in advance of Sunday’s home finale against the Lions and after practice, head coach Tony Sparano met with the media to discuss the match-up. Asked early on if he would give any consideration to using Tyler Thigpen as the starting quarterback in the final two weeks of the season, Sparano said that the teams needs to “continue to develop Chad [Henne].” He was later asked if he knows what he has in Henne and responded “I think I know a lot about him.” Other notes…
-LB Karlos Dansby was not at practice today, a coach’s decision. Sparano said he just wanted to get Dansby off his feet for a day.
-The Detroit offense poses some definite challenges, one of which is that the Fins aren’t entirely sure which QB they’ll be facing on Sunday: Drew Stanton or Shaun Hill, who took the first team reps for them today. Sparano said that the Lions like to do a lot of different things with Stanton, particularly some involving him running around.
-Sparano had seriously high praise for Lions WR Calvin Johnson, calling him one of the two or three best receivers the team has faced this season. The most dangerous thing about him, according to the coach, is that even when you think you have him covered, you really don’t, because of his skills in the air.
UPDATE: Here is video of Sparano diagnosing the problem with the Dolphins run game as well as his assessment of rookie DT Ndamukong Suh:
