Coach Sparano met with the media late this morning and addressed a variety of topics, including the kick return situation in the wake of Kory Sheets’ season-ending achilles injury. Sparano said that Patrick Cobbs will get some reps now and that he also has a couple of other guys he wants to see. He mentioned that during pre-season games there are such limited times to see kick returners in action which, to me at least, sounded like he wanted to know which guys he would be auditioning before going into the pre-season opener on the 14th.

Other things that stood out:

-When asked what will get WR Patrick Turner into the rotation at receiver, the coach said he needs to see consistency out of him. He also said that Turner got better and better last year as the season went on.

-As for the position battles on the interior of the offensive line, Sparano seems to be much more interested in seeing how guys perform in 1-on-1 blocking situations than anything else.

-The coach also hinted that the fans have a couple of practices to circle on their calendars: Saturday afternoon is looking like it will be a scrimmage and on Monday night at Sun Life Stadium, same kind of thing, with the team working on a lot of situational stuff. New defensive coordinator Mike Nolan will be up in the booth, too, which will be the start of an adjustment period: Paul Pasqualoni coached from the sidelines.

-When asked about linebacker Tim Dobbins, who was acquired on draft day from San Diego, the coach said that he liked the flexibility that Dobbins provides, being able to play at both the Moe and Mike inside linebacker positions. Also sounds like Dobbins will be a key contributor on special teams and Sparano went so far as to say that his “vision for [Dobbins] is starting to clear up.”

UPDATE: Here are some video highlights of his address, including praise for rookie CB Nolan Caroll, an explanation of Randy Starks’ approach to nose tackle, and more.
