After this afternoon’s scrimmage, the coach spoke with the assembled media and there was no question that the defense got the best of the offense today. Not that that’s something to read too much into, but Tony Sparano had high praise for Mike Nolan’s unit, which was very much ahead of Dan Henning’s, at least for 50-60 plays today. The coach did say, though, that the “body of work” to this point is much more important than just this afternoon. The team has already run about 700 plays during training camp and those tell the story much more than just a couple of hours worth of scrimmaging on a Saturday afternoon. Other things to mention:
-Rookie LB Austin Spitler was in action after missing most of camp so far with an undisclosed illness. He rode the bike during yesterday’s practice and had about 10 reps today.
-The quick whistle at the end of plays may have hurt QB Tyler Thigpen a bit because of his ability to improvise on the run. Sparano said because of this he’s very interested to see him in pre-season games.
-Dan Carpenter missed three straight field goals early in practice, from 36, 39, and 41 yards out. When asked about the misses, Sparano said that knowing Carpenter, the bad stuff is now out of his system. He also said that he’s “not worried about him right now.” Towards the end of practice, Carpenter made three straight, from 34, 39, and 42.
-The coach who doesn’t like to single guys out once again brought up rookie CB Nolan Carroll as a guy who stood out to him today. He has been very impressive so far.
UPDATE: Here are video highlights of the coach’s address, as you can watch him discuss the defense’s strong afternoon, Chad Henne’s accuracy, and the return of TE David Martin.
