NFL Top 10: Week 1

[1]Welcome to the first edition of “NFL Top 10.” Each Wednesday during the ¬†season, I’ll power-rank the Top 10 teams in the NFL. Who will be #1? Who do you think should be #1? Read on to find out…

#10: Tennessee (1-0): Impressive showing against the Raiders in their opener; will be fun to see them compete in one of the league’s toughest divisions.

#9: DOLPHINS (1-0): Defense looked awesome on Sunday in Buffalo and if Henne and Marshall connect on the long ball, or if Sapp and/or Allen catch their should-have-been pick six’s, that game ¬†would have been ugly for the Bills.

#8: Pittsburgh (1-0): Without Ben Roethlisberger, they opened up their season with an OT win against the Falcons and still have one of the best D’s in the NFL.

#7: Minnesota (0-1): Wasn’t super impressed by them in the Thursday night opener at New Orleans, but still a good team. Great test and opportunity for the Fins this week.

#6: Indianapolis (0-1): The Colts did not look good at all against the Texans in their first game, but they’re still the Colts, and they still have Peyton Manning.

#5: Houston (1-0): Awesome Week 1 statement by these guys and Arian Foster should help open things up for Andre Johnson. Really good team in a really good division.

#4: Green Bay (1-0): Would be ranked higher if not for two things. 1) They let Michael Vick and the Eagles back in the game on Sunday and 2) losing Ryan Grant for the year is a HUGE blow. They were my pick to win it all. Not sure about that now.

#3: New Orleans (1-0): Defending champs opened up with a win, though we never really saw the offense get going the way it did last year. Great team, but could have been more impressive last Thursday.

#2: New England (1-0): With all of the questions about the Pats–especially their defense–they went out and showed taught a lesson in their opener. Essentially shutting down the Bengals offense was more impressive than anything their offense did. And their offense looked really good.

#1: Baltimore (1-0): Not that I think the Jets are very good or that they should be able to score a lot of points, but the Ravens’ defense looked as good as ever and even though they didn’t light up the scoreboard, they showed they have the offensive weapons to score some points this year. I was very impressed.

So clearly the AFC is leading the way here early in 2010. In my Top 10, there are just three NFC teams (New Orleans, Green Bay, and Minnesota) and three of the four teams from the AFC South are represented, as well. Be sure to vote for which team YOU think should be #1 this week and check back next Wednesday for our Week 2 rankings.
