Aqua through the Years
By on June 17, 2011 at 12:54 pm

Two colors: aqua and orange.

For over 45 years, they have represented the Miami Dolphins. They were worn by Joe Auer in 1966, by Bob Griese in 1972, by Dan Marino in 1984, by Zach Thomas in 1996, by Jake Long in 2008, by Cam Wake in 2010, and by every other player over the six decades of Dolphins football.

They were worn in the AFL, the NFL, in five Super Bowls, at the Orange Bowl, and at Sun Life Stadium. Those colors are the Miami Dolphins. And yet over the years, not everything has stayed the same.

While the Fins’ overall look is still pretty consistent with how the team came out of the tunnel on September 2nd, 1966, there have been changes–some more noticeable than others. There was the switch from wearing aqua jerseys at home to white jerseys at home that took place in 1972; there was the introduction of aqua pants in 1989; the Jimmy Johnson-led re-design in 1997; and the introduction of the alternate orange jersey in 2003.

Most people know about those changes and many probably think that those are the only serious adjustments to the Dolphins look over the years. And they’d be right. But there’s been a more subtle and fluid series of changes that have taken place over the years that require a much more keen sense of awareness: the aqua has not always been the same. In fact, by my unofficial count, there have been no fewer than six shades of aqua used between 1966 and 2010. Some of these shades are close to identical while others are noticeably darker or lighter.

Check out this slideshow to see some of the different shades of aqua that have been used over the years.

Big thank you to the newly launched Gridiron Uniform Database, who have put together a database of pretty much every uniform ever worn in NFL history.
