John Congemi: Marshall, Wake, and the Top 100

It’s always an honor when your peers vote or rank you among the best at what you do and that’s what happened when players around the NFL started ranking the Top 100 players currently in the league. So far, the Dolphins have been well represented, as wide receiver Brandon Marshall and pass rushing sensation Cameron Wake both made that list.
Wake was voted at number 63 and Marshall came in at number 61. Wake’s magical season in 2010 vaulted his skill set on the radar hopefully for years to come. His ability to create pressure in the pocket and utilize his blend of speed and strength up the field makes it difficult for most offensive tackles in the league to sustain a block.
The season that Wake was able to put together might be difficult to repeat because of the ways teams will start to game plan for him. Even last season, from the fourth or fifth game on, opposing teams knew where number 91 was lining up, and they made sure to send the running back or fullback in that direction to help with protection.
I believe that Wake’s presence on this list is well-deserved and probably slotted accurately, but if he puts together another 14-sack season or better, Cameron will be on the fast track to challenge the very top of the list!
From the moment Marshall came to the Miami Dolphins last year, big things were expected from him. He was bringing with him three 1,000 yard receiving seasons and the “Big Play” potential. He delivered a solid season last year for Miami and was a dependable weapon for this offense. Although his touchdown production wasn’t where anyone would like it to be (3), his yardage (1,014) and total receptions (86) kept up with his career numbers. This Top 100 list has Marshall at number 61, which doesn’t reflect his overall skill and ability. Eleven wide receivers were picked ahead of Marshall on this list, and that’s a number that I totally disagree with! I can see where Houston’s Andre Johnson or Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald may lead the pack, but I can make the argument for Marshall to be in the top five wide receivers playing football today.
It’s always a great honor to be mentioned on this type of list by your teammates and your competitors. For both of these Dolphins, it’s a list that they should expect to be on because they have the ability to change the outcome of a game with one play.
*On yesterday’s show, Jesse Agler, Kim Bokamper, and Twan Russell discussed Marshall and Wake’s place in the Top 100:
