Moments before the start of the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft, Mike Pouncey stepped up to the podium inside the Media War Room sporting a Miami Dolphins ballcap. The team’s first-round pick (15th overall) on Thursday night was smiling throughout his second session with the South Florida media and let down his guard a little as the questions continued.
The 6-foot-5, 303-pound center and twin brother of Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey confirmed that he will wear No. 53 for the Dolphins “so me and my brother can have the same number,” he said. “I think that number has already been a standout number in the NFL and I just want to represent it the same way.”
That sense of humor Pouncey displayed at the Combine in Indianapolis returned when he was asked about the similarities between Dolphins Head Coach Tony Sparano and his former offensive line coach at Florida, current Temple head coach Steve Addazio.
“They’re both Italians and I think all Italians are born angry,” he said. “So I’m looking to be coached hard and I can’t wait to get out on the field.”
The Lakeland native stepped it up a notch after being asked who was older, him or Maurkice.
“I am by a minute,” he said. “But I can’t tell him that because anytime I say I’m older he says he forced me out to see if everything was clear out there.”
Now he’s looking forward to returning for the rookie mini-camp, whenever that takes place.
