After last night’s show, in which I had trouble comprehending the fact that ProFootballTalk.com’s newest mock draft had the Fins taking FSU quarterback Christian Ponder at #15, we received the following note from a listener (we’ll call him “Mike.”):

SUBJECT: For your factually challenged host Jesse.

1..Christian Ponder is small.

Same size and weight as Brett Farve & Aaron Rodgers.

2..Noodle arm. MVP. Senior Bowl, most impressive quarterback..Combine. go to the internet and see Ponder throw a 50 yarder on line acrossed his body. I trust you can find it.

3..West Coast system..He is has played the Pro set his entire career.

4..Always hurt..Shoulder injury making a defensive play. Thats a doctors call, He is clear on the arm issue. By the way Joe Montana lost a year to a shoulder injury at Notre Dame.

Jesse your knowledge is in the pathetic column.

First off, Mike, thanks for listening! Now was I a little overly harsh on Ponder? Probably. That’s radio. But I do want to defend some of what I was saying, so let’s break down Mike’s e-mail point-by-point…

1..Christian Ponder is small…Same size and weight as Brett Farve & Aaron Rodgers.

This wasn’t one of my main points and while, yes, Ponder is 6’2, same as Favre and Rodgers, that, to me, is not ideal QB height. Obviously a QB can be a Hall-0f-Famer at 6’2, but when talking protoypes at the position, most would prefer a bigger dude. Marino (6’4), Roethlisberger (6’5), and Peyton Manning (6’5) are all noticeably taller. Even within this draft class, guys like Ryan Mallett (6’6) and Cam Newton (6’5) and Blaine Gabbert (6’4) are all taller. Is Ponder Doug Flutie out there? No. But I don’t think he’s ideal QB height. That was my only point. Did I exaggerate it? Probably. But it’s not like I pulled it out of nowhere.

2..Noodle arm. MVP. Senior Bowl, most impressive quarterback..Combine. go to the internet and see Ponder throw a 50 yarder on line acrossed his body. I trust you can find it.

This one I take a bit more exception to. Now was “noodle arm” the nicest way for me to put it? Probably not. That said, he doesn’t have the biggest gun at the show. Don’t take my word for it. Scott Wright of DraftCountdown.com lists Ponder’s arm strength as his #1 weakness in his scouting report. Was I impressed by his Senior Bowl performance? Absolutely. Not once did I say I wasn’t. I just said I don’t think he has a great arm and I stand by that. As for the YouTube video of Ponder throwing a 50-yarder on a line “acrossed” his body? I think we all know by now that the Internet is full of miraculous things done by less than miraculous people. I trust you can find examples.

3..West Coast system..He is has played the Pro set his entire career.

Here’s where we may have had our signals crossed a little, Mike. I never said he played in a West Coast system at FSU. In fact, I went out of my way to point out that they used a pro set (with some spread) in Tallahassee. What I did say was that he is projected to be most successful in a West Coast system at the next level.  Now that’s not my projection, that’s what all the drafheads are saying. And why are they saying that? Because of his less than stellar arm strength. Now look, never once did I say I didn’t think the guy has a chance in the NFL. My two main points were 1) that I was shocked (for several reasons) that PFT projected him to be the 15th overall pick. And 2) it was nuts that the last time he played a game for FSU, he was a mid-round guy. Now he’s jumped into a potential first half of the first round player.

4..Always hurt..Shoulder injury making a defensive play. Thats a doctors call, He is clear on the arm issue. By the way Joe Montana lost a year to a shoulder injury at Notre Dame.

It was more than one injury in his career, Mike. He had the shoulder his junior year, on-and-off elbow issues his senior year, and that’s not even mentioning the concussion that caused him to miss time. Did Joe Montana lose a year at Notre Dame? Yes. Is Christian Ponder Joe Montana? I really don’t think so. Maybe you do and maybe you’re right. Time will tell. Until then, let’s agree to disagree.

Jesse your knowledge is in the pathetic column.

Ouch.
