Miami Dolphins Head Coach Joe Philbin came to the podium at his daily press conference today and announced that rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill would be the starter. This news isn’t shocking considering the progress Tannehill has shown throughout training camp and in his two appearances in the preseason games.
It’s funny how things worked out for Tannehill. It took a injury to quarterback David Garrard to open this competition up again and the fact that quarterback Matt Moore didn’t get the best effort from his supporting cast last Friday night in Carolina. My gut tells me that Tannehill probably was even or evaluated slightly ahead of Moore coming out of the Tampa Bay game and the gap wasn’t closed by Moore after the Carolina outing.
It should be an extremely exciting time for the Dolphins and Tannehill when you consider what’s happening around the league at the position. Jake Locker was named the starter in Tennessee, and with Andrew Luck (Indy), Robert Griffin III (Washington), and Brandon Weeden (Cleveland), this franchise is putting its future in the person they trust to lead them for the foreseeable future. The next thing to do for all Dolphins fans is to settle in and trust that the eighth overall selection in the last April’s draft can hold up his end of the bargin and produce touchdowns and victories sooner than most people expected.
