Starks was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday for his standout performance in Cincinnati, which included an interception and two pass deflections.
The recognition is giving him a little extra attention, but Starks likely wouldn’t have been able to fly under the radar heading into this Sunday’s game against St. Louis, anyway; the Rams’ staff is too familiar with him.
Fisher, of course, coached him in Tennessee. But Rams offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who held the same position for the New York Jets for the previous six seasons, knows Starks can make a big impact, too–the Dolphins’ defensive tackle picked off Mark Sanchez twice in Miami’s season-ending 19-17 victory over the Jets last January.
As their attention has turned to the Dolphins, they’ve kept an eye on Starks.
“He’s played very, very well,” Fisher said in a conference call with the South Florid media. “Brian says it seems like every time they play the Dolphins, Randy makes a big play in the ball game, whether it’s an interception or a sack or a caused fumble.”
Tennessee drafted Starks in the third round (71st overall) of the 2006 Draft. His emergence as a Pro Bowl-caliber player in Miami — Starks was named to the AFC Pro Bowl team in 2010 — is no surprise to his former coach.
“We saw Randy had a great deal of potential. We drafted him fairly high and Randy did a nice job for us,” Fisher said. “Knew that as he continued to work, he was going to be a good football player.”
