Coyle Praises Sean Smiths Two-Interception Performance
By on October 3, 2012 at 6:03 pm

Sean Smith wanted and received the opportunity to cover Cardinals All-Pro receiver Larry Fitzgerald, and he responded in a big way.

The fourth-year Dolphins cornerback limited Fitzgerald to just 64 yards on eight receptions and recorded his first career two interception.

In his weekly press conference, defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said he was pleased with the way Smith rose to the occasion.

“It was great to see him take the challenge and play, perhaps, his best game since he’s been a Dolphin,” Coyle said. “Not just the interceptions which were exceptional plays, but throughout the game he was steady.”

Smith’s first interception, an acrobatic grab on the right sideline, was a snapshot of his unique blend of size and athleticism on display.  Based on circumstance, though, his second pick may have been more impressive, as the Dolphins had just allowed Patrick Peterson to return a fumble inside the 5 yard line.

“Not only did he make the interception, but, when the quarterback breaks contain out of the pocket, there’s no such thing as illegal contact anymore and Sean pushed the receiver out of bounds, which made him ineligible and made the catch almost simultaneous to knocking the guy out of bounds,” Coyle said. “That was as heads up as smart a play as you’ll find a defensive back make in a pressure situation.”
