Dolphins Emphasizing Football, Fans In New Philosophy

The Miami Dolphins are entering a new era.

From a football standpoint, the changes are fairly obvious: a brand new coaching staff, including Head Coach Joe Philbin, different schematic philosophies and even the addition of Ryan Tannehill, the first quarterback selected by the team in the first round since 1983.

But the team isn’t just changing on the field; it’s evolving off of it, too. The organization has sped up efforts to create more two-way communication while embracing its football past.

In a recent Palm Beach Post article, Dolphins executives, including CEO Mike Dee, said that the plan to focus on football tradition and transparency was reinforced by what transpired during the Peyton Manning courtship.

“We recognized that the world has changed, and we weren’t in control of our message,” Dee told the Palm Beach Post’s Ben Volin. “And we saw the velocity in which the digital age, and in particular social media, can shape public opinion.”

Winning is an elixir for a professional franchise’s ills, but in today’s league, one filled with parity, there is sure to be both peaks and valleys. No matter the result, Dee said it’s important to have a running dialogue with the fans.

“There’s no better form of marketing than winning, but it’s not all about that from a marketing perspective,” Dee told VolinĀ . “You’ve got to have engagement with the community that can help you weather the storm.”

By agreeing to participate in HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” the team will be drawing the curtain a bit, letting fans–and everyone else, for that matter–see what goes on behind the scenes with the football staff. It may appear, at face value, that signing up for a reality show would contradict the organization’s intention to become less Hollywood. After all, it will put a national spotlight on the team as it holds training camp. The decision makers, however, see it as a way for fans to reconnect with the Miami Dolphins from a purely organic level, emphasizing football above all else.

“We are convinced that (this) will allow football fans everywhere an opportunity to comprehend the significant sacrifices and demands that our players endure each day,” Philbin said.
