For the past decade, Tom Brady’s superb play has consistently ended the “Who’s the AFC East’s best quarterback?” argument before it could ever gain any traction.
He’s been, unequivocally, the best. Brady’s not getting any younger, however, and we may not be very far away from a time where another quarterback grabs the torch.
That’s why Ryan Tannehill could be entering the division’s quarterback landscape at an opportune time. As Brady’s ability diminishes, Tannehill’s will conceivably increase and the balance of power could shift, if all goes according to plan.
But what about right now? What’s the AFC East’s current quarterback power poll look like?
“I held an open competition in 2011 to determine the No. 2 quarterback in the AFC East, and Moore came out on top fair and square,” Walker wrote. “Moore was the most consistent quarterback. He made 12 starts and was solid throughout.”
There’s no guarantee, of course, that Moore will even begin the season as the Dolphins starting quarterback. He first must beat out newcomers David Garrard and Tannehill during training camp to “re-earn” his spot. Because of this, in Walker’s estimation, Moore’s hold on the AFC East’s mythical No. 2 quarterback ranking is tenuous, though not because of a lack of consistency.
This dynamic is what makes Walker’s rankings interesting. Of the division’s quarterback’s not named Brady, Buffalo’s Ryan Fitzpatrick is probably the only without-a-doubt Week 1 starter, yet Walker ranks him last. Perhaps it’s an indictment of Fitzpatrick and Mark Sanchez, but it seems that’s Moore’s ranking was based on performance.
“The No. 2 slot in this division might be a revolving door,” Walker wrote, “but Moore has earned it for now.”
