Evans: Tannehill Will Be Best of 2012 Quarterback Draft Class

[1]No matter what transpires during their respective NFL careers, Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Ryan Tannehill will be connected by one April night.

Each of their successes and failures will be measured against each other, creating a never-ending need to rank the young quarterbacks.

NFL Network analyst Heath Evans joined The Finsiders and gave a bold prediction as to which of three will rise to the top. [2]

“I firmly believe that Ryan Tannehill will end up being the best quarterback out of this draft class,” said Evans, referring to the trio of quarterbacks taken in the first round.

The Colts, of course, chose Luck, the draft’s consensus top prospect, with the first pick in April’s draft. It always seemed like it would be one of those no-doubt type decisions. There was the faint allure of ¬†Griffin’s athleticism and college transcendence, but Luck’s perceived ability to be able to step right in was too much for Indianapolis to pass up.

This–a lower professional ceiling–is precisely what Evans is worried about with Luck, though.

“I think we’ve seen Andrew Luck’s best,” Evans said. “You’ve got to remember, this guy was coached by Jim Harbaugh for years, so he’s NFL-ready. He’s NFL-groomed.”

At this point, it’s a question of whether you prefer the known or the unknown. While Evans, who played with both Drew Brees and Tom Brady, thinks that Luck and Griffin will be successful NFL starters, it’s Tannehill’s potential that intrigues him the most.

“I think all three of those quarterbacks have it,” Evans said. “But when you look at prototypical potential, if the coaching is done right and the situation is going to be formed and molded around Tannehill, I think this kid has everything that you want for this day and age of offensive football in the NFL.”

Evans, a South Florida native and former Dolphins fullback, has criticized the franchise in the past, citing what he once perceived to be a lack of institutional control. He, however, liked what he saw on the field towards the end of last season and thinks it can carry over into this season with new head coach Joe Philbin. If that success is to carry over, Evans feels they need to be committed to grooming a quarterback because of the position’s importance in today’s NFL. Selecting Tannehill certainly was a start.

“They’ve made their choice,” Evans said. “They need to do everything and anything within their power, whether it’s bringing in the right wide receivers, the offensive line, the system that’s going to be ¬†molded to fit this particular player.”
