Fantasy: Week 9 Q & A
Posted By The Finsiders On October 31, 2012 @ 1:57 pm In Football | 1 Comment
Week 9 of the fantasy season begins tomorrow night in San Diego, so we turn to our fantasy guru, James Morris, to provide answers to several questions on the minds of fantasy owners this Halloween.
Question: Jamaal Charles had just 5 carries for 4 yards last week against Oakland, should fantasy owners worry and consider benching him this week against the Chargers?
James Morris: No. Remember, Head Coach Romeo Crennel is a defensive minded coach, and all the offensive duties are left to OC Brian Daboll. I personally don’t like when a Head Coach isn’t at least involved with his team’s playcalling, and this is a great example of why. If you remember back in week 2 Charles had 6 carries for 3 yards, and then busted out with 33 carries for 233 yards in week 3. I expect similar carry totals this week from Charles.
Question: With Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Vernon Davis, and Dustin Keller all on bye this week, do you see any “sleeper” TEs that I can look at as a one-week rental?
James Morris: By week 9 of the season the waiver wire in just about every league is picked cleaner than a wishbone on Thanksgiving Day! But, a few TEs I like this weekend are Heath Miller (owned in 71 percent of NFL.com leagues), Scott Chandler of the Bills (15.9 percent) and Jermaine Gresham of the Bengals (15.6 percent).
Question: What the heck is going with the Steelers running back situation? Rashard Mendenhall has played in just two games this season, and there is talk that Jonathan Dwyer might remain the starter even when he does return. Is it worth it to keep holding on to him or is it time to move on?
James Morris: This situation becomes murkier since Dwyer sustained a quad injury and is uncertain for Sunday’s game against the Giants. The consensus among the Steelers beat writers Dwyer should start if he is a go. I wouldn’t cut Mendenhall because until something is official, nothing is official. Isaac Redman might factor in as a third-down back, if he is healthy, but most likely wouldn’t start over Mendenhall or Dwyer. All of this being said, I would also keep a close eye on the situation and be ready to pull the trigger when and if the time comes when the Steelers announce a decision for Sunday’s game against the Giants. Of course, it’s a late-afternoon kickoff, so if it were a true game-time decision, owners would be smart to have another option ready to go for Sunday.
Question: With so much uncertainty surrounding Michael Vick, is it worth it to pick up Nick Foles?
James Morris: Head Coach Andy Reid has come out and said the Vick will start for the Eagles on Monday Night vs. the Saints. I know that Reid won’t just give up on Vick without a fight. Vick is making a good chunk of change this season ($12.5 million), so benching him pretty much puts the nail in Reid’s coffin. So long story short, I would pick up Foles if you have a player who will never crack the starting line-up for your fantasy team, but I also wouldn’t get my hopes up just yet.
Question: Do you think any trades will be made by the deadline that will make any real headlines?
James Morris: Well, if Mike Thomas getting traded from the Jaguars to the Lions doesn’t get the trade fires burning, I don’t know what will! Truth be told, there aren’t many trades made in professional sports because there are more things to consider overall, unlike in fantasy sports. The biggest moves we are likely to see are maybe guys like Steven Jackson from the Rams or DeAngelo Williams from the Panthers getting moved. Jackson is running on 3 flat tires these days, and Williams couldn’t beat out Jonathan Stewart in Carolina. Jared Cook is rumored to have asked for a trade, but that could all be speculation as well. I doubt we see any James Harden NBA-esk blockbuster deals at the deadline.
