Fantasy: Week 9 Sunday Injury Update
Posted By The Finsiders On November 4, 2012 @ 8:56 am In Football | 9 Comments
We are officially past the halfway point of the NFL season, and the injuries are piling up and causing chaos for fantasy owners. With stars like Calvin Johnson, DeMarco Murray and Darren Sproles all injured and either out, or questionable, fantasy owners have to scramble to find replacements or stay the course and see if their guy will play. A lot of times waiting to mere minutes before kick-off to set their final fantasy line-ups. Well, that is where TheFinsiders.com comes in handy. Our fantasy guru, James Morris, provides all the news and info you will need to make the best possible decisions to get you into the fantasy playoffs and have a shot at winning the league title.
Week 9 Sunday Injury Update by James Morris
Calvin Johnson is a true game-time decision with knee problems, and there is speculation that he will be limited to 3rd down duties only. Even if he is limited to one down, I would still play him against a Jaguars secondary that is hobbled and giving up big plays.
Darren Sproles broke his hand and is out indefinitely. Sproles already underwent surgery to repair the problem, so his best case scenario is a week 13 return. I don’t personally see that happening, but think a return for the fantasy playoffs is within reach. However, with the Saints currently sitting at 2-5, they could also choose to sit Sproles for the remainder of the season if they are eliminated from the playoff race.
Roddy White is working through back troubles, but is going to be a full go after practicing Thursday and Friday. I like him a lot against the Cowboys in week 9.
The Dallas Cowboys are dealing with two high profile players ailing right now. Felix Jones is listed as probable and will play. He is working through knee and shoulder injuries, and the Falcons like to air it out and get out ahead. That means the running game could get put on the back burner, and Jones is ranking out as a low-end RB2 this week. Then there is Dez Bryant nursing a hip injury. He is listed as probable is almost sure to be in the line-up against the Falcons. I have him as a low-end WR2 this week, so tailor back your expectations.
Ryan Tannehill is a game-time decision today with a knee problem. He and Brian Hartline (groin) were both listed as questionable. Karlos Dansby (biceps) is officially probable and should be available for today’s game.
Isaac Redman is listed as probable for the Steelers, and is expected to start with Rashard Mendenhall and Jonathan Dwyer doubtful. I think the big-box websites are putting too much stock in Redman’s fantasy value this weekend, and have him penciled in as a high-end flex play against the Giants.
Pierre Garcon has been ruled out for this week’s game, and isn’t even a lock to return following the Redskins week 10 bye. I cut ties with Garcon about three weeks ago, and you should too. For a guy that has played in just three (3) games this season, and has just 8 catches for 153 yards and a TD, there is no reason he should be owned in 74.0 percent of NFL.com leagues still.
St. Louis Rams WR Danny Amendola is not going to play in week 9, but has said he will “absolutely play in week 10.” If he is available on your waiver wire (owned in 34.3 percent of NFL.com leagues), it would be a great idea to grab him and stash him. The Rams desperately need their favorite go-to guy back.
Brandon Pettigrew was upgraded to probable on Thursday, and is going to play today. He is averaging 5.4 catches-per-game this season, and makes for a solid low-end TE1 play.
Jermichael Finley is also listed as probable for Sunday, but should be on any and all fantasy benches. If you look up “bust” in the dictionary, there will be a picture of Finley next to it!
Texans TE Owen Daniels is listed as probable with hamstring problems. Word is that it is more of a tweak than an injury, so I still have him listed as a solid TE1 today. Ben Tate has been ruled out for this game, but he isn’t a real fantasy option unless Arian Foster goes down.
Kenny Britt (knee) and Nate Washington (knee) are both listed as probable today, but neither is a good fantasy play against the Bears defense. Britt is a low-end WR3, and Washington is barely a flex play.
Donald Brown was downgraded to questionable and is a game-time decision against the Dolphins. But, even if he is active and plays, he will work in rotation with Vick Ballard. I wouldn’t recommend Brown or Ballard unless you are in a deeper league.
