Former MVP Gannon Impressed With Tannehill Taking Initiative

[1]When Ryan Tannehill was named the Dolphins’ starting quarterback, it was evident the rookie quarterback was going to have to balance leadership responsibility with his own personal adjustment to the professional game.

Tannehill’s intimate knowledge of Mike Sherman’s offense has, perhaps, jump-started the process.

Rich Gannon, at the Dolphins’ practice facility ahead of Sunday’s game [2], got a behind-the-scenes look at how the rookie quarterback handles a room. On Friday, the Dolphins offense held a players-only meeting to get in some final work for the Jets defense.

“The meeting was run by one, Ryan Tannehill,” Gannon said. “It’s amazing to think, but he’s in there and he’s talking. They’re watching tapes, they’re watching some cutups, they’re watching some practice film. They’re talking about what’s he’s seeing, what he’s thinking.”

Having a young quarterback grab the reins in an offensive meeting room is certainly a symbolic transfer of leadership, but Gannon feels there are tangible effects, too.

“It just benefits everybody. It benefits the players in the room. It helps him in terms of his ability to lead men. They see that he’s done the work.

Gannon will be calling Sunday’s game on CBS with Marv Albert.
