Griese Discusses Tannehill Selection

[1]Prior to the selection of Ryan Tannehill, the Miami Dolphins had only drafted three first-round quarterbacks in franchise history.

The second of the three, Bob Griese, joined The Finsiders to discuss his reaction to the pick and whether he thinks Tannehill should play right away.

“If they had let him go that would be alright because they know more about the than we do,” Griese said. “If they took him, I was really going to feel good because I know they felt like this was going to be the guy.”

After waiting nearly three decades to select another first-round quarterback, the Dolphins will have a chance to let Tannehill develop at a nice pace because they have Matt Moore and David Garrard on the roster.

“Here we go. We’ve got a first-round quarterback,” Griese said. “This one we’re going to put in the oven a little bit, let him cook a little and bring him out a little bit later down the road and see what happens.”

Tannehill has stated a willingness to come in and learn from Moore and Garrard, and Griese thinks that’s a good mindset for the former Texas A&M quarterback.

“He should be a sponge,” Griese said. “Just go in with the wide eyes, an open mind and just with the idea of learning everything he can.”

Because he was selected so high, there will certainly be expectations for Tannehill to succeed right away. Griese said that, even though there has been a recent run of successful rookie quarterbacks, it won’t be discouraging if Tannehill doesn’t start immediately, noting that Dan Marino, Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady waited patiently until they were given a chance.

“If five years from now we’re looking back at this thing,” Griese said, “and we say, ‘Ryan had to sit for a year or a year and a half, but, boy, when he got in there he was ready to go and the team took off with him, that would be alright.”

One thing that could ease Tannehill’s transition–and may help him get on the field quickly–is his familiarity with the offense.

“He’s going to have one step up on those two guys,” Griese said. “The fact that the terminology that Mike Sherman used with Texas A&M is probably going to be the same with the Dolphins.”
