In His Own Words: Anthony Fasano

[1]As the regular season approaches, it will be interesting to see what type of niche Anthony Fasano’s finds in an offense that should feature plenty of two-tight end sets.  Fasano recently spoke to Jesse Agler [2] about the quarterback competition and the adjustments he’s had to make in Joe Philbin’s offense. Here’s what he had to say:

On the spread offense:

“It is [fun]. A lot of time offenses are put in to be able to spread the ball around, but as the season progresses, one or two guys usually get the bulk. But I think we really have an opportunity to stay true to spreading that ball around in this west coast type of offense”

On his familiarity with West Coast type of offense:

“Not professionally, a little bit in college. I think it suits our team well, especially for our running backs, being able to run that gap scheme and having our athletic linemen get on the edges of people. I think our running game is going to benefit greatly from it. I think quarterbacks are going to start feeling more comfortable with players and knowing certain routes and being able to, sometimes, substitute short run with short pass.”

On the quarterback situation:

“I think they are great, all of them. It’s kind of a weird situation having three capable quarterbacks. It is going to be interesting to see how it pans out. We will have a great starter, whenever that starter is announced, and we will have a great backup or two. I am looking forward to working with all of them, and building a relationship with some comfort.

On building relationships with the quarterbacks:

“It is a challenge that we are going to have to get through. Having this type of off-season, I think we have a lot more time, I think we have already put a lot more time than any offseason I have been apart of, and that is just going to continue to grow through June. I think having that extra time is going to help being able to get comfortable with multiple guys.”

On the pace of practice:

“It is a fast pace, a lot of quick thinking going along, a lot of quick signals and a lot of movements and motions. It’s a big learning curve, but again, I think we have done well with it and I think it’s only going to, if we get it down to be one of our strengths, I think it is going to help us down here in this weather.”

On his veteran role on the team:

“I appreciate it because I was once there before [being a rookie]. Personally, I try to take a younger mentality to the game and not look over stuff I think I know pretty well, but also trying to be that veteran guy in the room. I really have never been closer with a group of tight ends than I have with this room and this group. I love coming to work every day with them, and it makes that player-to-player relationship much better.”
