Players React After First Day of Practices

[1]On the eve of draft, the Dolphins’ veterans hit the field for the first time this year at the team’s voluntary mini-camp.

So, in earnest, the Joe Philbin era is officially under way in Miami.

The Finsiders talked to Jared Odrick [2], Tyrell Johnson [3] and Legedu Naanee [4] to get their reactions after the first on-field action of the year and to find out what it’s like adjusting to a new coaching staff.

Odrick said that Philbin has tweaked a few things to fit his style, but practice didn’t didn’t feel like it had changed drastically.

“It’s not really too different,” Odrick said. “It’s football all over again. You get the same feeling when step back on the field, put the tape on, get in the hot tub, stretch and you get to hit somebody again.”

A noticeable change for Odrick could be the way he and his fellow defensive linemen line up in Kevin Coyle’s base defense. While there’s a chance the Dolphins shift to more four-man fronts, Odrick said that Kacy Rodgers, who returns as defensive line coach, is still preaching the same things.

“There’s a few things that are different, and there’s a few things that are carried over from last year,” Odrick said. “One thing as a D-line that we take pride in is how well we played in the run game last year.”

There are, of course, several players who are not only dealing with a new coaching staff but also completely different surroundings. Tyrell Johnson, the newly signed defensive back, said that his first day with the Dolphins felt completely different.

“It’s quite a transition,” Johnson said. “I didn’t think it would be this tough, but it’s just like coming from college to the NFL. It’s the same. You’ve got high expectations, you come in, you’re the new guy. You want to be a team player and not step on too many toes.”

Not only will the Dolphins look to spread it out this year in Mike Sherman’s offense, but they’ll also probably play at a noticeably quicker pace.

“A lot of the things we do as far as the tempo on offense, the operation (with) plays coming from the sideline, is something I’ve never done before,” said Nannee, who will be playing in a West Coast offense for the first time. “It kind of gives you that fresh start feel, and it makes you really want to get into your book and learn what’s going on.”
