Prisco Talks Dolphins Training Camp

While he was in Davie as part of his NFL training camp tour, CBSSports.com’s Pete Prisco joined Jesse Agler to discuss Chad Johnson’s release and the team’s quarterback competition.
Joe Philbin handled Johnson’s situation decisively, citing a lack of fit between player and organization. Prisco felt that the diminishing return on investment–even if it cost the team next to nothing financially–just wasn’t worth it.
“The reason that Chad Johnson isn’t here is because Chad Johnson, at best, is probably a fourth or fifth receiver,” Prisco said. “He doesn’t run that well anymore. He didn’t run well when he was good, and I think they realized that and it’s not worth the distraction. If he was worth the distraction, he’d still be here.”
Once the 24-hour news cycle passes, the Dolphins will emerge unscathed–he signed a non-guaranteed contract in June. It was taking a flier in the truest sense. But for Johnson, more questions than answers remain. Is this it, for one? If there’s still a willingness to play, you can never say never in the NFL–a team may end up surprising you.
“Came here, had an opportunity and blew it,” Prisco said. “And when you blow your last opportunity, I think you’re done. But, then again, who knows? Pete Carroll might decide he wants to bring him to the home for old receivers and bring him in up there in Seattle.”
The Dolphins’ quarterback competition remains a fluid situation, even more so, perhaps, with presumed front-runner David Garrard shelved because of knee surgery. His absence has directly affected the rep With the extended look, Tannehill has been solid, prompting Philbin to not rule out a preseason start for the rookie. If it were up to Prisco, Tannehill would be the guy, not necessarily based on performance but on philosophy.
“If you drafted this guy in the first round and you’re worried about him getting shell shocked, you drafted the wrong guy,” Prisco said.
During a time of year known for prognostication, Prisco made one of the boldest claims: The 2012 Patriots will go undefeated in the regular season. He came to the conclusion after a systematic, two-week process in which he played out every single NFL game on the schedule, failing to find a game he thought New England would lose.
As for the Dolphins’ other fierce division rival, the Jets, Prisco sees problems ahead.
“It’s a disaster for Mark Sanchez,” Prisco said. “Why would Mike Tannenbaum bring in this mess? It’s a gimmick. It was a gimmick when they ran it here; I used to say that all the time.”
