QB Moore Discusses Importance of Practice Reps

[1]For those wondering when Joe Philbin would name a starting quarterback, keep waiting.

Despite some attempts to identify an early front-runner, almost in the same vein of political “horse race journalism,” it remains a fluid situation, with reps being fairly evenly distributed.

Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore sat down with Jesse Agler to talk about the competition and what looks different with the team’s defense.  [2]

Though some questioned early in three-day mini-camp whether a quarterback had emerged, it became clear that each guy was going to get a shot leading the first team. In this case, it was somewhat of a perfect storm; there were three days for three quarterbacks. Moore said that the quarterbacks have entered with an idea of what to expect.

“We’re rotating,” said Moore, who was named the 2011 team MVP. “All of us in that room have an understanding of the situation that we’re in. The coaches come to us with the reps that we’re getting on any given day. To be honest with you, it’s all balanced, really.”

Because of the quarterback’s importance in the modern NFL, the curiosity surrounding the competition is hardly surprising, especially at this time of the year. While things elsewhere around the league may seem like they’re stuck in neutral, uncertainty is fueling intrigue in South Florida. Moore said, though, especially this early in the summer that the focus should be on the team not the individual.

“The key to that, whoever it may be, is you just got to make the most of them,” Moore said. “It doesn’t matter who takes the reps, as long as we’re getting better collectively as a team. That’s the main objective of mini-camp.”

This offseason, of course, is the first time that David Garrard and Ryan Tannehill are facing the Dolphins defense on a consistent basis. What could have been an advantage for Moore is being neutralized, however, by the defense’s new attacking scheme. He, just like the other two quarterbacks, is dealing with a defense that disguises its blitzes and coverages much differently.

“They’re just flying around,” Moore said. “They’re rolling into some coverages out of looks that you would never think that they would do that from, so I think it will be exciting. And they’re fast. Those guys are fast.”
