Recapping Ryan Tannehills First-Team Reps

Rookie QB Ryan Tannehill took snaps with the first-team offense for the first time during training camp today.

PLEASE NOTE: THE INFORMATION IN THIS POST IS HIGHLY UNOFFICIAL. THESE ARE OBSERVATIONS SHARED BETWEEN MYSELF AND JOHN CONGEMI AND WERE DONE WITHOUT THE BENEFIT OF INSTANT REPLAY OR THE ABILITY TO REVIEW THE PRACTICE TAPE.

At today’s practice, one of the big questions of the summer was answered, as rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill took reps with the first team offense for the first time during training camp. There weren’t a ton of plays, but we did get to see #17 with the first unit.

Tannehill and Matt Moore swapped spots towards the end of team drills and Tannehill took four snaps with the first group:

  1. A completion to Marlon Moore of about 10 yards on the far side of the field. Looked liked an out route.
  2. The play never got off as the center-quarterback exchange was fumbled and the ball was recovered by Charles Clay.
  3. A pass intended for Chad Johnson was incomplete, with nice coverage from Nolan Carroll.
  4. A handoff to Daniel Thomas.
After a short break, Tannehill once again took some snaps with the first team in what appeared to be a blitz-pickup period. The first two plays were with the first-team offensive line:
  1. A play-action dump off to FB Jorvorskie Lane for a short gain.
  2. A deep pass on the near sideline was incomplete. Intended for Julius Pruitt with Carroll on the coverage.
The first-team offensive line then rotated out and the next group came in for three more plays:
  1. A quick completion to Davone Bess.
  2. A pass that was just out of the reach of TE Anthony Fasano on the right side.
  3. About a 12-yard completion to Johnson, who made a nice catch around CB Jonathan Wade.
Again, the main story today was that Tannehill took some snaps with the 1′s. As Joe Philbin said in his press conference, reps (for everyone) have to be earned and the situation is very fluid. And so now the next question is when will Tannehill once again take snaps with the starters and for how many plays?
The nice thing is we may get answers as early as tomorrow!
