Report: Dolphins Agree To Terms With Former Patriot Guyton
By on April 16, 2012 at 10:15 am

The following post is based on a media report and has neither been confirmed nor announced by the Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins, looking to add some depth at linebacker, worked out four free agents early last week.

On Friday, the team agreed to terms with Gary Guyton, the former Patriots linebacker, on a one-year contract, according to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson.

Guyton could compete for a starting spot with incumbent starter Koa Misi. There’s been much speculation as to what defensive scheme the Dolphins will run, but Guyton has experience playing both inside and outside linebacker in both 3-4 and 4-3 schemes. This versatility and above-average speed–he ran a 4,47, the fastest 40-time for a linebacker at the 2008 Scouting Combine–could help Guyton see the field.

The four-year veteran started 32 games at linebacker for New England after being undrafted out of Georgia Tech. Before seeing his playing time reduced towards the end of last season, Guyton recorded 47 tackles and added an interception for the AFC Champions.

After starting two games during his rookie season, Guyton replaced Tedy Bruschi in the starting lineup when he retired prior to the 2009 season, starting all 16 games. He did, however, see his playing time decrease during the past two seasons.

A source also told Jackson that the team hasn’t ruled out signing Quentin Groves–one of the four who worked out last week–after this month’s draft.
