Rex Ryan: Tannehill Is Not A Regular Rookie

[1]The schemes may be different under a new regime, but the Jets feel that they know the Dolphins’ personnel well, especially with Tony Sparano heading to New York in the offseason.

But they haven’t seen Ryan Tannehill yet and will have to prepare accordingly.

In a conference call with the South Florida media [2], Jets head coach Rex Ryan said his team isn’t rolling out a special, pressure-filled game plan just because his defense is facing an inexperienced quarterback.

“If he was a regular rookie that would definitely be a true statement. But this young man clearly knows the offense, he’s been in that system, so you can tell he’s comfortable. He doesn’t look like a rookie back there,” Ryan said. “A lot of rookies have that deer in the headlight look, and he really doesn’t have that. He seems very confident in what he’s doing right now.”

Ryan is quite familiar with at least part of the Tannehill-Joe Philbin dynamic. In 2009, he, too, was a first-year head coach who started a rookie–Mark Sanchez–at quarterback and that combo made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game.
