5 Questions with Rookie OL Dallas Thomas

070513-thomas660 [1]With the 77th pick overall in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins selected Tennessee offensive lineman Dallas Thomas to help contribute to the Dolphins’ front line. The 3rd round pick was anxious to get out on the field right away, but a nagging injury kept him out the first few days of practice. But now, after getting to participate in a few OTAs and minicamp, Thomas has finally gotten his first taste of NFL action.

John Congemi of The Finsiders sat down with the rookie offensive lineman [2] to talk to him about his first couple months in the NFL so far:

(On his first impressions of being a member of the Miami Dolphins) – “It’s a blessing, I love it here. I’m just getting used to the new city and all that, seeing everything, taking it all in. I love it.”

(On if he now he feels he belongs, after finally getting to practice) – “Yeah it did, but I had to knock all that rust off because it’s been so long, but it was fun to get back out there because it was so boring just to sit on the side and look at plays and watch them and you have to get all the mental reps. Mental reps are good too, but just sitting on the side really wasn’t fun. But getting back out there, and getting a chance to show what you can do, it’s just a blast.”

(On how he feels playing at tackle and guard, and what his natural position is) ”I can play both now. I don’t like one more than the other. I like tackle and I like guard, but just at tackle you gotta deal with more speed, and at guard you gotta deal with more power down there and they’ll be on you faster. You just gotta be able to know what you’re doing at the position so you can have good technique when you go in at guard or tackle.”

(On the difference between practice in the SEC and practice in the NFL) – “Nothing, they’re the same. Just coming in, that was the first thing I realized when I got my first practice, it was the speed really didn’t matter because now everybody’s a professional, everybody’s good now. It’s not just you play some, like in the SEC, a small team that wasn’t as good as the certain type of players that you have. Out here in the NFL, everybody’s good. So everybody’s fast, everybody’s strong at all that.”

(On whether Richie Incognito has made him do anything because he’s a rookie)- “I had to go get a refrigerator for the room because they said they wanted drinks. I got to keep it loaded and all that.”
