Andy Cohen: Tackling Fans’ Questions

Posted By Andy Cohen On August 27, 2013 @ 9:54 pm In Football | 10 Comments

130828_AC_AM [1]Andy Cohen In The Morning appears every Monday through Friday until the end of the season, except for the bye week. The column is posted each day at 6 a.m.

Have a question for A.C.? Submit your questions to Andy Cohen on Twitter at @ACohenFins [2].

##############

Q. Think Miami trades for a tight end? Maybe Scheffler from Detroit? Celek from Philadelphia? @DolphinPride72

AC: My gut feeling is that they will do something. Not sure, though, it will be by a trade. Waiver wire remains a possibility. I believe strongly that Jeff Ireland will explore every option out there. Personally, I’d like to see them bring in a veteran with receiving skills similar to Dustin Keller, assuming that player is available.

##############

Q. What players do you think are poised to surprise the national media and/or casual fans? @FinFan71

AC: That’s a tough one. Pin me down and I’ll tell you that Lamar Miller has a chance to surprise a lot of people this season. He is a gifted athlete and I’d love to see him in the open field. I believe he is the reason the Dolphins did not keep Reggie Bush.

##############

Q. Where do you think Ryan Tannehill needs to improve the most to take his game to the next level? @CaddyShackD

AC: Eliminate costly mistakes. Tannehill will be the first to tell you that he threw far too many interceptions last year. It is encouraging that he hasn’t been intercepted in the preseason. But the regular season is played at an entirely different pace with different challenges. I’ve already seen indications that he’d rather take a sack than force the ball into double coverage, which is good to see for a young quarterback.

##############

Q. Playoffs? That’s pretty brief. @JamesMeara

AC: I’ll be equally brief: Why not?

##############

Q. The Fins are most likely to draft a (what) in the 1st round next year? @Pow766

AC: Wow. You are asking me to look into my crystal ball and right now that ball is looking ahead to the season, not beyond. But never one to shy away from a question, I’ll go with a tight end or another playmaker on offense. The defense seems set for years to come.

##############

Q. Do you think the ‘Phins should get Kobayashi to eat Dustin Keller’s contract? @MindFunk21

AC: C’mon now, be nice. Keller deserved the money he received [3]. Truthfully, I’m still sick about this injury and it has nothing do with how much food I’ve consumed.

##############

Q. Do you think Jeff Ireland will realize there is no seam threat on this team & make a move? @briantortorelli

AC: He sees what you do. And as I told a previous questioner, I know that Ireland continues to exhaust every option. But keep in mind nobody is going to be giving away good football players [4] with the season so close.

##############

Q. How long until Dion Sims is the starting tight end and can he be a threat in passing game? @rob_Fraenza

AC: I like Dion Sims. He seems to have the entire package. I expect him to play quite a bit this season, much more now that Keller is out. But I don’t expect the Dolphins to rush him into the starting lineup. Perhaps by midseason.

##############

Q. Andy, Tannehill scares me the way he stares at his targets. What can be done to teach him to look off? @anemail13

AC: That comes with experience and you’ve got to remember that Tannehill didn’t come to the Dolphins with a lot of experience. I agree with you. He does have a tendency to stare down his receivers. But I see him improving in that area and I can tell you he is certainly aware of that tendency.

##############

Q. How far behind is Jamar Taylor? @FranciscoHinoPe

AC: It’s unfortunate that Taylor was never healthy enough in the preseason [5], until recently, to put together a string of practices. He is clearly behind right now, but I expect he will catch up in a hurry. He is a gifted player and I see both him and Will Davis being factors in this secondary for a long time.

##############

Q. Where’s Jelani Jenkins? @edwardethan

AC: I’ve asked several people that question as well. He just hasn’t made enough impact plays to be noticed. I’m told his value will be on special teams where he excelled in college. Keep in mind, he wasn’t drafted to be a starter since the Dolphins are loaded with veterans at linebackers.

##############

Q. Does it look like the offensive line is jelling to you? @Jeff722

AC: I can tell you this: The line has improved over the course of camp and now that all five starters are healthy, there is a real chance to build some continuity. I don’t expect this to be the strength of this team, nor do I expect it to be the weakness. I like what I’ve seen recently of left tackle Jonathan Martin [6] and, as you know, he is the key to this line.

##############

Q. Am I crazy to think Dannell Ellerbe has a legit shot to win Defensive Player of the Year? @kingbunes

AC: Not crazy, just a little premature. This much I can tell you: Ellerbe has been as impressive this preseason as any player on this team [7] and it wouldn’t surprise me, now in the prime of his career, if he earned a trip to the Pro Bowl.

##############

Q. Level with me Andy. Do you really see this defense having a chance against early opponents like New Orleans, Atlanta and Baltimore? @rgkopp

AC: Write this down and keep it close. As long as the Dolphin D stays relatively healthy, they will be dominated by no team. Yes, they are that good and the rushing defense may, in fact, be the best in the league. Paul Soliai, by the way, has a lot to do with that.

##############

Q. Andy, tell us what you see happening in the season opener at Cleveland? @travis_tco

AC: I see the Dolphins winning. I see Tannehill out-playing Brandon Weeden. I see the rushing defense making life miserable for Trent Richardson. If I squint real hard, I can see the scoreboard: Dolphins 23, Browns 10.
