Behind Enemy Lines: Davone Bess

Davone Bess [1]For the first time in his career as a professional, wide receiver Davone Bess will not suit up for the Miami Dolphins for a regular season opener. Coincidentally, Bess will be facing off with his old squad this Sunday as he makes himself at home in Cleveland.

The former Dolphins receiver was traded to the Browns this past offseason.

“It’s going to be different,” Bess said in a conference call [2] on Wednesday. “Obviously, me knowing them, them knowing me, it will be easy to get rattled and let the emotions get the best of you.”

However, the Browns’ new receiver says he’s not concerned with emotions being an issue.

“We want to compete to win the ball game,” Bess said. “I got a lot of respect for all the guys on that side and I’m pretty sure it’s the same way vice-versa, but we know what it is come Sundays and once we’re playing between the lines. It’s time to work.”

And while some may think Bess will be carrying a chip on his shoulder into Sunday’s matchup due to the scenario, he insists that’s not the case.

“No, I wouldn’t say a chip on my shoulder,” he said. “If that’s the case, my chip is every Sunday against every opposing team because I didn’t get drafted. So, every Sunday I try to have a chip on my shoulder for the opposing team who didn’t draft me. That’s the way I approach the game and that’s the way it is.

“From my perspective, I don’t hold any grudges. I’m forever thankful for the Dolphins organization for giving me the opportunity to play in this league. We’re nothing without the opportunity, so I’m forever grateful for that and all good things must come to an end.”

As Bess transitions into his new organization, one of the processes has been getting use to working with a new quarterback in Brandon Weeden. When asked about the difference between Weeden and Ryan Tannehill, Bess pointed to the different systems more than anything else.

“Obviously, they’re two different players,” he sad. “The big part of that is they’re [in] two different systems. I will say from a mental standpoint, they’re both sharp players—very poised, don’t really get too high or too low.

“I wouldn’t say one is better than the other in any particular categories, but I know for a fact they both are really smart, very intelligent and know how to make plays with the football.”

Bess was also grilled about the Dolphins’ secondary, a unit that looks significantly different than when he was in Miami last season.

“Overall, I think Coach Coyle does a great job at putting those guys in the right position, so I wouldn’t say they’re better or worse,” Bess said. “They’re very sound, very disciplined and really don’t make a whole bunch of mistakes. We know [Chris] Clemons and Reshad [Jones] have been there for a couple years. They know the system very well, so we know for a fact there’s not going to be a lot of mental errors from that standpoint. So we have to be sharp, we got to understand our leverage and we got to attack them.”
