Bush Looks Ahead Toward Uncertain Future

Bush OAK TD [1]The Dolphins’ season-ending loss in New England two weeks ago kicked off a very important offseason. With 12 free agents — eight starters — coming off the books, decisions will need to be made before the team makes five selections in the first three rounds of April’s draft.

One of those impending free agents, Reggie Bush, publicly expressed his desire to return to Miami on several occasions in the season’s final few weeks. In two recent chats with The Finsiders [2], Bush described what is special about the Dolphins franchise.

“This is an organization that is built on a tradition of winning,” Bush said [3]. “When you look back into the past, the undefeated team, you have great players like Larry Csonka and Dan Marino, Coach (Don) Shula, you have some great history here. For me, it’s an honor and a pleasure to be able to play for such a prestigious organization.”

When he was in New Orleans playing in Sean Payton’s high-powered offense, Bush was used all over the field, primarily in the slot. And as he had at Southern California, Bush returned punts, quickly becoming one of the league’s premiere special teams threats.

When the Dolphins traded for him, however, they offered something different: the chance to be an every-down feature back. It wasn’t all about proving doubters wrong, though; Bush wanted to be a part of a franchise-altering revival.

“When I first got here, they asked me what I felt like I could bring to this organization,” Bush said. “One of the things is I want to help restore that greatness, bring back the passion about Miami Dolphins football. Let’s pack the stadiums out, let’s win some championships and let’s get this city on fire.”

His increased role with Miami the past two seasons — paired with his NFL service time, now at seven full years — has resulted in a big leadership burden, too. Bush became the veteran presence in the running backs room, especially in 2012, with second-year running back Daniel Thomas and rookies Lamar Miller and Jorvorskie Lane logging major playing time in the Dolphins backfield. He wanted to be what Deuce McAllister was for him: a veteran presence who could help speed up a steep learning curve.

“It’s helped ground me, if anything,” Bush said. “It’s helped ground me in a sense of just knowing that I’ve got to be on my p’s and q’s for these guys, for the younger guys.

“Yeah, I definitely think I have a lot left to show, a lot left to prove, a lot left to give to this game. Like I said, hopefully we can get something done as soon as possible.”
