Davis Taking The Road Less Traveled

Davis, the 93rd overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, didn’t follow the regular road to the Dolphins. In fact, he took several detours. Davis started playing football during his senior year of high school. He was a star high school basketball player in Spokane Valley, Washington, making the switch over to the gridiron in his final year at Central Valley High School.
That led to a scholarship to a Division II program at Western Washington University. Unfortunately for his football dreams, the university disbanded the football program after his redshirt season.
Getting the rug pulled out from under you like that would discourage most players, but Davis is not most players. Still determined to get a shot at the pros, Davis transferred to De Anza College, a community college in California. The ball-hawking corner made such an impact there that it eventually got him to a Division I program at Utah State, where he flashed his NFL level talent for the Aggies during his two-year tenure there.
Now nearing the end of his unique road to the pros, Davis gets his first shot at prime time tonight, playing in front of a national audience in the Hall of Fame Game against the Dallas Cowboys. He’s smiling ear to ear and can’t wait for the opportunity as he told The Finsiders earlier this week
“This Sunday’s a big game. I’m just excited to go out there in front of the fans and the family and the entire defense and show in a game what I can really do,” Davis said.
It wasn’t always easy for Davis to keep going though after the many road bumps that he encountered. At points, he didn’t even know if the path would continue.
“Honestly, at one point (after Western Washington dropped their program) I thought maybe football is not my path,” Davis said. “It was a grind; there were definitely nights where I would sit there and think, ‘Maybe this isn’t for me.’”
However, he quickly realized football was his passion and that he would persevere in his journey no matter what.
“But then you wake up and you go to practice, and that’s when you realize that competitiveness kicks in when you’re out there. You really find out if you love it or not,” Davis said.
Love it he did, enough to pursue his passion to the highest possible level.
With all that behind him now, Davis is now focused on learning as much as he can from the veterans in front of him, so he’s definitely ready for the bright lights of the National Football League.
“Brent (Grimes), he’s in there helping a lot of people and (Dimitri) Patterson and Richard Marshall, those guys help out a lot,” Davis said. ”They know the game, they’ve been there years on years on years, and they know the vet tricks. They know those moves, and if they can teach it to us young’uns, I’ll gladly learn it.”
The rookie should soak in as much as he can now, because before he knows it, the bright lights will shine on him and he will finally have arrived to his final destination all along: the pros.
