Dion Jordan Looks Ahead To Rookie Season

jordan [1]Part of the intrigue with Dolphins first-round pick Dion Jordan is about potential, sure, but it’s also a result of the mystery with how he’ll be used.  Unlike most incoming rookies, it’s not just what he does on the field that will get people talking; it will be about how he does it.

Will the lanky speedster have his hand in the ground? Is he more of a stand-up edge rusher? Heck, when will he play? He could be a third-down specialist, at first, before eventually growing into an expanded role.

Jordan wasn’t able to participate in OTA’s and mini-camp while he finished up his degree, stoking some of speculation about his role, but he’ll return to the field in less than two weeks when training camp opens.

In a recent interview with The Finsiders, that aired on Tuesday afternoon [2], Jordan said that he’s spent some time since he finished up at Oregon with Dolphins defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle, talking about what type of role he’ll have this year.

“He’s mentioned to me numerous amount of times what he’s planning on doing with me, the different types of schemes that the defense allows me to line up and do different types of things,” Jordan said. “He’s a very exciting guy.”

While Coyle cooks up ways to use him, Jordan eagerly awaits what’s up next: his first pro camp.  Though it may be in a yet-to-be-determined role, he is looking to do one thing during his rookie season.

“Getting after the quarterback is a very important thing,” Jordan said. “My ability to come off the edge and chase those quarterbacks down, and also being lined up with a bunch of guys who have tremendous ability to get after quarterback and make these big plays, not only on the front end but on the back end.

“If I can help out any way as far as doing whatever, alter a throw, whatever I have to do to make a play, that’s what I’m willing to do.”
