Dion Sims: I’m Going To Be Used A Lot

070813-sims660 [1]One of the Dolphins rookies who caught the eye of several analysts [2]during the team’s offseason program was fourth round selection Dion Sims. The rookie tight end is a former basketball player, who finished fourth for Mr. Basketball in the state of Michigan during his senior year of high school. While at Michigan State, Sims decided to concentrate on football and became a productive player for the Spartans, earning second-team All Big Ten honors in 2012. Despite being used frequently as a run blocker at Michigan State, the Dolphins are looking for Sims to be a dual-threat in the offense as a threat in the passing game along with being a big body for the ground game.

Sims recently sat down with John Congemi of The Finsiders [3]; here is a portion of the conversation:

How excited are you to be a Miami Dolphin?

“It’s a blessing to be in this position not many people get this opportunity… I’m thankful for being here. I’m thankful for the Dolphins drafting me and allowing me the opportunity. Obviously they saw something in me that I can do to help this team out so everyday I am just anxious and ready to go.”

Is there a lot more responsibility for you position here at tight end in this offense as oppose to what you were use to in college?

“Yea, I am required to do both…. I’m going to be a receiving and a blocking tight end. The league is more of a passing league whereas at Michigan State I was more of a blocking tight end. I’m going to be used a lot here. I’m very versatile right now. So, I’m just working on polishing up that aspect of my game and it is very challenging for tight ends to be able to play a big role in the passing and blocking game.”

How was the transition from a college offense to an NFL offense?

“It was a lot different just paying attention to detail picking up every little thing studying the playbook, learning all the concepts, blocking assignments changed. Its pretty much just the pace of the game its a lot faster now here in the NFL but I mean it is still football. The main goal is to make each other better and just get better along the way.”

What were your first initial impressions on Ryan Tannehill?

“Coming in I thought he was a great guy just from the little words we shared. I think he is a tremendous leader he definitely has a great attitude. He is definitely putting this offense on his back…”

What are your expectations and goals for your rookie season?

“To get better as a person and a player I want to sit back and look at the vets and see how they do it because you know those guys have been here for the longest. I’m just trying to taking after them like (Dustin) Keller and (Charles) Clay who have been here for a long time and once I get my feet wet I will be ready to go, ready to get moving and come in a make an impact on the team and do whatever I can to make us win…”
