Injuries force several starts to miss time, which means the waiver wire is likely to be a hotbed of activity.
The big free agent addition this week needs to be RB James Starks in Green Bay. Word is that Eddie Lacy could sit until week 5 as the Packers have a bye in week 4. The Packers also have Johnathan Frankin in the backfield, but after Starks’ 168 yards of total offense and a touchdown on Sunday, I don’t think Franklin is much of a threat in week 3.
Recommendation: Unless Starks really tears up the boxscore with amazing stats, he is a short-term waiver wire add, but a good one nonetheless.
Too many people are going to run out to their waiver wire and grab Eddie Royal and thrust him into a starting spot in their line-up for week 3. The problem is that after a 3 TD performance last week, you can be sure the Titans defense is going to focus on keeping the ball out of his hands this week.
Recommendation: I would pick him up as a WR4 or low-end flex play this week, but not someone I would play in standard 3 WR leagues.
The Falcons ruled out RB Steven Jackson for week 3 on Tuesday, which means there something to this thigh injury if they didn’t even give him time in practice to see if he could play through it. Jacquizz Rodgers and Jason Snelling will handle the carries until S-Jax can get back on the field, but that doesn’t mean you should go grab them.
Recommendation: I wouldn’t touch Rodgers in a standard scoring format no matter who I had at RB, and would only consider picking him up in PPR leagues as a desperation flex play. I would leave Snelling alone all together as his carries are likely to be limited to goal-line or short yardage situations.
There were differing reports on Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski’s ability to play this weekend. One report said his chances were 50/50, while another said his chances of playing were closer to 25 percent. My personal view is that week 4 is the most likely return date for him and even then he is a questionable play because we just don’t know what the truth is about his health. The Patriots face the Falcons in week 4 and they are averaging just 9.0 fantasy points-per-game to TEs through the first two games of the season.
Recommendation: Wait and see how he responds in practice before anointing him the starting TE on your team unless you are hurting there.
The Miami Dolphins roster is set now with Lamar Miller carrying the ball 14 times for 69 yards (4.9 YPC) and a touchdown on Sunday. The only real waiver wire move you could make is Charles Clay for those in deeper leagues. NFL.com finally changed Clay over to a TE for their fantasy game, and as a TE he can be looked at in 16-team and deeper formats because he has 10 catches and 163 yards receiving in the first 2 games of the season.
Recommendation: He is more in the TE2 range, but he has sneaky play ability against the Falcons.
Reggie Bush is already dealing with a knee injury that Lions Coach Jim Schwartz termed as “medium term.” He continued by saying “If we’re going to be without him, we’re going to need to find other ways to move the ball and other ways to score because we didn’t get that done in the second half.”
Recommendation: It sounds like the Lions are thinking Bush might miss week 3, and it might not be a terrible football move with the Redskins struggling themselves right now. Joique Bell is sure to see extra snaps either way, and he becomes a high-end flex play in week 3. Until Bush is ruled out, he has to be in your line-up as an RB2.
Those in 2-QB leagues should know that Brandon Weeden is likely to miss week 3 with an injury to his right (throwing) thumb. The only reason this really matters is because Jordan Cameron has been a fantasy beast thus far, and the Browns are getting back their #1 WR in Josh Gordon this week. Jason Campbell is the most likely starter, with Brian Hoyer a possibility.
Recommendation: Chances are Campbell starts and that means you should instantly expect less from everyone on the Browns roster.
