HOF-Elect Cris Carter Talks Mike Wallace

072713-Wallace660Though some may question whether you truly need a “No. 1 receiver”¬†in Joe Philbin’s West Coast offense, fans and media will likely expect Mike Wallace to slide into that alpha dog receiver role in 2013.

After all, he brings something that the Dolphins have been lacking for quite some time: a true deep threat. His greatest strength is Through a week of training camp practices, though, Wallace has been used all over, in all types of capacities — intermediate routes in the slot, running quick slants, bubble screens, hitches, posts patterns, pretty much making his way through the entire route tree.

The Dolphins had a visitor at Friday’s practice, soon-to-be Hall of Famer Cris Carter, who sees the beginning stages of a potential evolution. He sees Mike Sherman working to put Wallace into different spots, creating that No. 1 receiver mentality in the process.

Carter spent some time talking to Wallace after Friday’s practice, getting the sense afterwards that the new Dolphins receiver feels he still has a lot to prove.

“This is one thing I know about Mike Wallace: He is not satisfied with that big contract, like he wants to be a great player,” Carter told The Finsiders’ John Congemi. “He does not think he is great now. So that type of attitude is what you want to see with a guy who has spent four years developing, has some type of success. He is still very, very ¬†hungry.”
