Instant Analysis: Franchise Tag Applied To Randy Starks
Posted By John Congemi On March 4, 2013 @ 7:23 pm In Football | No Comments
The Miami Dolphins have decided to use the franchise tag by applying it to defensive tackle Randy Starks . The nine-year veteran and two-time Pro Bowl selection will receive a one-year fully guaranteed deal worth 8.45 million dollars, buying time for the Dolphins to negotiate a long-term extension before July. This solidifies the defensive tackle position for 2013 with teammate Paul Soliai already under contract through the 2013 season.
Starks was a big part of a defense that ranked seventh overall in the AFC in total defense and third in scoring defense behind Denver and Pittsburgh. Starks started all 16 games for the third time in four seasons, and recorded 4.5 sacks, five passes defended, two tackles for loss and one interception in 2012. The defensive line is now poised to possibly add another pass rusher opposite Pro Bowler Cam Wake in free agency or in April’s draft. In my opinion that will take this front seven to an elite level.
