Luck And Inches Define The Final Seconds In Pittsburgh
By on December 9, 2013 at 4:35 pm

Miami Dolphins v Pittsburgh SteelersThe Miami Dolphins narrowly escaped being on the wrong end of a miracle in Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon, when the Steelers offense lateraled several times on the game’s final possession before Antonio Brown stepped out of bounds just shy of the end zone.

As the saying goes, it’s a game of inches.

“At one point,” defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said,  “it kind of looked like to me like when we were kids and you play in the school yard, like keep away—guys started looking around to who the ball might be going to next as opposed to who actually had the ball and let’s get people to try to get on the ball.

“It was an unusual scenario the way the ball kept on filtering, it looked like a rugby game there for a minute. But hey, when they say it’s a game of inches, well we found that our for sure yesterday and the only thing missing was the band.”

Coyle, who calls the games from the coaches’ box, painted a colorful picture of what the scene looked like up there as those wild final seconds unfolded.

“I was trying to be calm in the coaches’ box to be quite honest with you. I have a tendency to stand up during the games at times, especially at key plays and at the end of the game. So I was kind of standing there watching and as the banter was going on. I was trying to say, ‘We got ‘em, we got ‘em, we got ‘em…I don’t know if we’ve got ‘em…’,” he said with a laugh. “I tell you what, though, he’s a heck of a receiver and when he accelerated, he was flying. It was scary, it was definitely scary.”

Down on the field, the players were likely thinking the same.

“No, this can’t be happening,” Brent Grimes said. “That’s what I was thinking. We got lucky, that’s all. I keep saying it, sometimes it’s good to be lucky.” Fi
