McDuffie Breaks Down Wallace Signing
By on March 13, 2013 at 12:30 pm

Wallace PGThe Dolphins, looking to add some explosiveness on the edge, targeted free agent wide receiver Mike Wallace and were able to act fast, striking a deal shortly after the 4:00 pm start of free agency on Tuesday.

As news broke that the Dolphins had reached an agreement with Wallace, former Dolphins wide receiver O.J. McDuffie called in to The Finsiders to break down what could be a franchise-altering move for Miami.

What makes Wallace such a match up problem and what he adds to a developing offense, McDuffie said, is the ability to hurt an opposing defense multiples ways, whether its on a quick hitch or an over-the-top route that gets him behind a defense.

“Once he catches it, he’s a flat-out burner,” McDuffie said. “So I think he can play in any style offense just because of his speed and his ability to catch the short ball and long ball, as well.”

The Dolphins receiving corps, while productive in spots last season, failed to generate points often enough. Miami’s receivers only accounted for three of team’s 12 receiving touchdowns. So there was an oft-mentioned desire to add “playmakers” this offseason, guys that could find the end zone and open up the field for quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

“I’m glad that Ryan has such a big arm, because he’s going to need it with this guy.” McDuffie said. “He gets down the field so fast and Ryan’s big arm is going to help out a lot. What it’s going to do, too, is that middle is going to open up so much. Sometimes we call what Mike Wallace is going to run wooden duck routes. Those quack quacks where he’s got to run and take two or three guys with him. Watch Davone Bess and watch Brian Hartline work that middle, wide open, 15, 20 yards down the field.”

For a team that was looking for a big-play boost, Wallace could be a great fit.

“You’ve got a guy who can score, from anywhere on the field.”
