NFL.com Ranks Tannehill Among NFL’s Best Young QBs

RT OTA [1]The stakes seem to get higher for each wave of young quarterbacks that enter the league. Right now, it isn’t enough to be the future, you have to be the present, too.

But the most recent class of young guns has seemed ready for most everything that’s been thrown at them, taking the league by storm the past couple of seasons, and Ryan Tannehill is certainly a part of that mix.

NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal ranked the league’s ten best quarterbacks 25 or under list [2] — a much tougher task than it was a few years ago, probably — and the second-year quarterback made the cut.

His impressive arm strength and mobility may be what jumps off the tape at first, Rosenthal said, but watch some more and you’ll some real nuance to his game.

“It’s the little things about Tannehill that impress,” Rosenthal writes.  ”He’s not afraid to throw the ball into windows. (Pass interference  often was his best play.) He changes plays at the line of scrimmage like a veteran. He usually makes quick decisions. Those traits got obscured for a variety of reasons last season, but Dolphins fans have every right to be thrilled about their quarterback selection. General manager Jeff Ireland got this one right.”

In the context of a typical rookie season, Tannehill’s first year in Miami was definitely a success. After all, he started all 16 games and broke Dan Marino’s franchise record for passing yards by a rookie quarterback (3,294 yards). But it wasn’t a typical season — Tannehill entered with a spectacular class of rookie quarterback, three of whom made the playoffs right away (Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson, Robert Griffin III). He may have not received the same attention this past year, but Rosenthal thinks Tannehill’s ceiling could be just as high.

“It wouldn’t shock me if Tannehill wound up eventually passing one or two of the big-name young quarterbacks in front of him,” Rosenthal writes. “I don’t see any big reason why Tannehill can’t evolve into a top-five NFL quarterback.”
