Odrick Talks About New Role On Defensive Line
Posted By The Finsiders On July 25, 2013 @ 2:27 pm In Football | No Comments
Most observers would point to the Dolphins defensive line as the strength of the team and, arguably, one of the best units in the entire league. The 2013 defensive line features Pro Bowlers Cam Wake, Paul Soliai and Randy Starks along with budding young lineman such as Olivier Vernon and Derrick Shelby, and 2013 first round pick, Dion Jordan.
A man not to be forgotten is Jared Odrick, the 2010 first round pick who started 12 games in 2012, finishing with five sacks, the second most on the team. Following a recent training camp practice, Odrick spoke with reporters about his versatility and the evolution of his role heading into 2013.
(On if defensive tackle is his new position) – “I guess if that’s where they put me. I’m going to be all over the place. I know I can do a couple a few things for this team and that’s why I’m here because I’m able to help the team in multiple ways and do multiple things. Today I was a (defensive) tackle day, and it felt good. You guys saw me there all off-season in the spring and whatnot. But I could be in a different position tomorrow if the coaches feel I need to be moved around.”
(On if he has the girth to anchor the line at defensive tackle) – “I’ve always had the girth! There’s no problem with girth. It’s just the hand placement. You’re still playing football. You’re still doing things that same things. It’s not like I’ve never played defensive tackle before. It’s not even getting back into it, because I’m already in it. So, I feel great.”
(On if it’s an adjustment to have three players, Starks, Soliai and himself, rotating at two tackle spots) – “No, we’ve been working together for so long, we know that the rotation goes in practice. It’s preseason camp, we realize that the more rotation, the better for all of us. It’s hot out. We’re getting acclimated to the heat once again, and people are coming in from all across the country and get into football shape. We’re all in great shape. The whole defensive line is in great shape, but ‘football’ shape is always different . So, we’re appreciative of the rotation we have right now. Hopefully that carries over into the season where we can rotate more and do more things.”
(On if the defensive line is the anchor for the entire defense) – “That’s what we want to place on our shoulders. That’s what we say every day. When we walk into this building, we know that the defense all starts with us . Having that type of mindset is what’s going to make us better and is what kept us a prominent force in the league.”
(On if he juggles his weight from time to time because he plays two positions) – “I do what they say. They (the trainers) give you a weight and they tell you what they’d like to see you at. If you’re comfortable with that then you do it. Obviously it’s not like I’m a rookie and they want me to be this or a specified weight. Since I’m all over the place and doing different things, they’ll give me a weight and if I’m comfortable with it good. You’ve got to think of it from a human standpoint as well. When they’re asking me to be 302 as opposed to 310, I look a little bit better in my clothes. So I don’t mind cutting down a little bit and when I’m going out I get a compliment like that shirt looks nice on you.”
(On how important training camp is to build a winning mentality) – “It’s very important. I think the vets realize that, and that’s what we’re trying to instill into the young guys. We got a lot of young guys that are trying to make this team and they’re going to be fighting hard. But at the same time we got to instill the type of values we have around here that coach wants to really resonate with the team and resonate with us.”
