Offense Looking To Put The Pieces Together In 2013

The starting quarterback now has a year under his belt and his confidence is on the rise. Veteran additions have been made to the receiver, tight end and offensive line positions. The days of uncertainty are gone as the franchise settles into the second year of coaching staff’s system.
Now, it’s time for the Dolphins to put it all together and translate the organization’s offseason work into wins on the football field. During the Dolphins All-Access Season Preview TV Show , several of the Dolphins offensive players gave their outlook for the 2013 season.
“It’s definitely exciting,” quarterback Ryan Tannehill said. “I think we’ve had a big offseason with the free agents we have acquired as well as the draft class.”
Tannehill, who completed 58.4 percent of his passes last year for 3,294 yards, 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, says he’s worked hard on various areas of his game in order to improve in his second season the Dolphins’ starting quarterback.
“I think I’ve grown a lot,” he said. “I think I’ve really tried to take advantage of this offseason. First of all, I let my body and mind recoup from the grind of last year. But then I went back, watching all my games, watching all my throws, breaking down the throws into short, intermediate, long, left and right—every which way just to get an idea of throws I made well and throws I need to improve on.”
“I expect to play a lot better. I think that’s what it comes down to.”
Brian Hartline, one of Tannehill’s top targets, says the Dolphins’ quarterback has a strong desire to get better.
“I think the most important is the desire to want to win, the desire to want to put the work in,” Hartline said. “And we have two guys that want to be really good, myself included, and Ryan.”
Hartline added that offseason additions in receivers Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson as well as tight end Dustin Keller also have that desire to constantly get better and most importantly, to win.
“We’ve got a lot of great pieces and it’s all about coming together,” Hartline said.
As for Tannehill’s ceiling, newcomer Wallace believes his new quarterback has the ability to be one of the league’s best.
“I came from a great one,” Wallace said. “One of the best in the world at what he does. Hopefully me and Ryan can get to the same stage and get him to be one of the best in the world, because he has the potential to do it.”
But when it comes down to it, this offense can only live up to its potential if the offensive line can hold up and take the next step, despite losing Pro Bowler Jake Long to free agency. Second-year player Jonathan Martin will replace Long, and the hope is high that he will be able to give Miami what it needs up front to succeed.
Center Mike Pouncey is confident that both his group and the team as a whole has what it takes to allow this offense to live up to expectations.
“The next step is building chemistry on the football team, because we look good on paper,” Pouncey said.
