Patterson’s Approach To Defending Brady
By on October 22, 2013 at 12:26 pm

060513-patterson768The Dolphins may currently be in the midst of a three-game skid, but you would never know that if you spoke with cornerback Dimitri Patterson. Patterson is still plenty confident his team has what it takes to right the ship and take home the division crown.

“I think the mindset around the room, on the defense, is everybody understands the big picture,” Patterson said in an interview with The Finsiders. “And when you look at the big picture, and you see how the teams are playing, how the teams are playing in the AFC East, it’s all competitive. But the good thing about it is, we’re in it.

“Our future is in our control. As long as we go out and do what we need to do, as a team, we can position ourselves to be standing tall come late December, early January.”

Speaking of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Patterson offered great insight as to the type of approach he takes when he goes up against an elite quarterback like the future Hall of Fame signal caller.

“I think when you look at Tom Brady and what he brings to the table, and what separates him and the four or five other elite quarterbacks in the NFL, is their mindset and their cerebral capacity,” Patterson explained. “When they break the huddle, they have a certain mindset and mentality as far as the progressions are concerned when they’re ahead of the defense and that alone gives them an advantage.

“At the end of the day, he’s a great quarterback, he has a great arm, he’s extremely smart, but you know what? He still has to play within what that scheme is. So when you look at tape, and if you have that mindset, ‘Ok, yeah he’s a great quarterback, but what are they doing? And what are his limitations within what they’re doing?’ When you have that mindset, I’m telling you, you could be extremely competitive.”

And with Brady seemingly struggling to get on the same page with his young receiving corps, there’s no reason Miami’s defense shouldn’t expect to be extremely competitive in Foxborough on Sunday.
