While wins like Friday’s 27-3 romp over the Jaguars are definitely enjoyable, everyone within the Dolphins organization would tell you that the most important thing during the preseason is for the units to make consistent progress and improve on a daily basis.
Ryan Tannehill was one of the many players who demonstrated progress and improvement in Jacksonville, taking a step forward with a solid showing on Friday. This came a week after a limited and uneven performance in the team’s preseason opener against Dallas in Canton. After his 5-9, 75 yard evening against the Jaguars, in which he connected with new tight end Dustin Keller for a 22-yard touchdown, Tannehill spoke with reporters:
(On Mike Wallace getting game action with first team offense)- It’s good. I think that anytime you have the guys on the field that are generally going to be your starters it’s better for you. You’re able to get a more realistic feel and we were able to do that tonight, I think Mike (Wallace) did a good job for us.
(On the importance new additions like Dustin Keller involved in the offense)- That’s what the preseason is for, to kind of feel things out. Everything’s not going to be perfect and there’s no reason to stress about it. But we were able to move the ball around a little bit, spread it around, get the ball to Dustin (Keller), he had a couple of big catches- one down the middle and then one for a touchdown. And just kind of settle down into the offense and that’s what we did.
(On taking a sack on the first possession)- I think the first second-down play we had, I had Charles Clay coming open right in the middle, play just took a little bit to develop and I think somebody fell in and grabbed my legs. But I think for the most part that the offensive line did a good job.
(On his feeling after the decisive preseason win)- I think I feel good after we finally settled in, got a good drive, put a drive together, got some first downs and finished it off with a touchdown. It’s just a building block, it’s the preseason (so) don’t read too much into the negative things or the positive things. It’s just the preseason that’s what it is. But it’s here for a reason and we’re going to take advantage of it and see what we can improve upon.
(On if he wanted to get the ball deep to Wallace)- Yea, we had a couple shots called that I wanted to get to him. The safety was playing super deep so I didn’t want to chance it down the middle.(But) when you have a guy like that, there’s always that temptation just to air one out and let him run underneath it.
(On fans wanting to see Wallace get the ball deep)- Yeah, I mean we’ll eventually get him the ball. That’s what we’re here for and we had some play calls tonight to try to get him the ball deep and they did a good job, just had the right coverage called a couple of times that led to them covering it. When that happens you just have to be able to come underneath with the ball.
(On finishing on a high note with TD drive)- For sure. I think that was kind of our plan going in all along. Coming out after a good drive, I was trying to ask for one more (drive). We finally settled in, finally got into a little bit of a groove so I wanted to get one more but the coaches felt like we accomplished what we wanted to and it was time for us to come out.
