Day three of mini camp came as a surprise to the Dolphins players as Head Coach Joe Philbin split the team into two separate squads and practiced game-like situations after a pre-game warm up. There was plenty of competition from the aqua and white teams and the practice included all phases of offense, defense and special teams. Here are some of the highlights from today’s workout:

Tannehill Making Plays – Quarterback Ryan Tannehill completed the three day mini-camp looking sharp and in charge of the offense. He started out the day finding tight end Charles Clay for a nine-yard touchdown in the back of the end zone. Clay found some separation on a corner route to open up the scoring. Ryan also is developing chemistry with Rishard Matthews, finding him down the seam for a 40-yard completion and on the sideline for 18-yard one-handed reception on a comeback route. Tannehill also engineered a two-minute drive at the end of the workout finding check-downs to Lamar Miller and finding Clay to keep the chains moving. With nine seconds remaining and the score 33-26 in the simulated game, Tannehill found Marvin McNutt on a double move comeback route in the front corner of the end zone to give his team a chance to win with a two- point conversion. After a time out by the defense, Tannehill rolled to this right and found Brian Hartline on a diving reception for the conversion…and the win!

- Defense Getting Their Hands On The Football - The defense looked fast and aggressive using multiple looks and getting their hands in the passing lanes. Defensive Ends Olivier Vernon and Vaughn Martin were able to get their hands in the throwing lanes tipping passes and making it difficult on the passing game. The defense forced two interceptions on the afternoon and linebacker Lee Robinson got the first one! Robinson under cut an option route thrown by quarterback Aaron Corp to start the third quarter. The highlight of the day came from corner back Nolan Carroll when he stepped in front of a Matt Moore pass intended for wide receiver Armon Binns and took the interception down the sidelines for a defensive score.

- The Kicking Competition Has Officially Started – When the Dolphins selected place kicker Caleb Sturgis in the fifth round of this year’s draft, it was a clear sign that he would challenge Dan Carpenter for the position. Well today in my opinion, the competition has begun. Sturgis and Carpenter kicked well, but the strength of Sturgis’s right leg was hard to ignore. He booted a 58-yard field goal that split the uprights from the left hash mark, and also converted from 36 yards out. Both kickers were consistent with their kick offs and Carpenter converted from 35 and missed from 41 yards out. This battle should extend well into training camp and the pre-season, when the pressure gets turned up!
