Taylor Feels Jordan Is More NFL-Ready Than He Was As Rookie

jordan [1]The Jason Taylor comparisons started popping up even before the Dolphins traded up to take Dion Jordan, the athletic, versatile pass rusher from Oregon.

And, really, it wasn’t a stretch as far as those things go, because Jordan is built like Taylor — he has a similar tall, wiry frame. He was used all over the field at Oregon, even lining up in the slot to drop back in coverage.

Taylor, who hosted the Citi Jason Taylor & Ryan Tannehill Football ProCamp this week at the Dolphins facility, sat down in studio with The Finsiders [2] and said that he expects Jordan to “hit the ground running” during his rookie season.

“Dion Jordan is a lot more advanced, I think, than I was when I came in the league in ’97,” Taylor said. “Played at a bigger school than me, played the position longer – it was still so new to me and it took me a few years to really grow into understanding the game.”

It isn’t just Jordan, though. The Dolphins have a few young edge rushers — Olivier Vernon, most notably — that could make life a lot easier for Cameron Wake, who, despite racking up a career-high 15 sacks, constantly faced double-, even triple-teams, at times. So if the Dolphins already had a stud defensive end that’s a constant threat to blow up a play in the backfield, was it redundant to invest in a young player like Jordan who, theoretically, will bring many of the same skills?

“There’s a lot of guys that can rush the passer,” said Taylor, referring to the Dolphins defensive line rotation. “Listen, you have to do it by committee; it’s not a one-man show. I’ve been out there long enough to know that if you don’t have a whole lot of help, you catch a whole lot of hell.

“Every superhero kind of has a sidekick. It helps to have that one-two punch.”
