Two Dolphins Rise In Sports Illustrated Redraft

2012 NFL Draft: Miami Dolphins [1]Post-draft evaluation essentially begins, prematurely or not, as soon as the first pick strolls across the stage to shake hands with the commissioner.

On draft night you’ll hear plenty of analysts ask, “Did Team X get that pick right?” That’s certainly too early to second guess, but a year is just  enough of a sample size to start making some preliminary judgments.

While some teams feel great with their rookies heading into year two, others probably wish they could hit the reset button.

With a year of hindsight, Sports Illustrated’s Don Banks decided to redraft the first round [2], and a pair of Dolphins rookies, well, they wouldn’t be Dolphins at all, because their strong rookie seasons improved their retro-draft status.

If Banks could step into a time machine and he was making the picks, Ryan Tannehill would have been the No. 5 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The rookie quarterback’s steady season — as well as his potential, of course — helped him jump three spots from his original draft position.

But Tannehill wasn’t even Banks’ biggest Dolphins  riser.

Jonathan Martin, Miami’s 2012 second-round pick (42nd overall), vaults into the first round of the redraft. Banks, citing San Diego’s (18th overall) need to tighten up its leaky offensive line, makes Martin the second offensive lineman selected behind Vikings tackle Matt Kalil in this scenario, 24 spots higher than his original draft position.

For a franchise looking to build on some momentum, a repeat performance in this April’s draft — the Dolphins own five picks in the first 82 overall — would be big.
