Ja’Wuan James is the lone rookie likely to be on the starting offensive line, but possibly the man under the most pressure, as the edges were particularly troublesome for Miami last season. But the rookie has gone straight into the fire from the start of his career, and it’s likely made him a stronger player thanks to going up against one of the league’s top defensive line units in practice every day.
“It’s been rough, but it’s been great at the same time because I talk to Cam (Wake) before every game when we’re going against each other in pregame and then after every game,” said James. “I always tell him ‘Nobody is going to be like you out there’. I go out there and I play, and I’m like ‘wow, those reps at practice (against Wake) make the game a lot more slower, it slows it down and makes it a lot better.”
“It definitely helps going against guys like Olivier Vernon, Cam, Dion (Jordan), and all of them.”
Going against a Pro Bowler like Wake, and other strong pass rushers like Vernon and Jordan will prepare James for the tests ahead of him. Against Dallas, he will likely face George Selvie, a 16 game starter for the Cowboys last season. But the battles against the Dolphins defensive line will definitely come in handy when he faces off against more accomplished stars like Mario Williams, Justin Tuck, and Julius Peppers.
James just wants to show that he can live up to expectations, and prove to the coaches he can be a valuable part of this offense for years to come.
“I want to be able to put it all together,” said James. “I want to show the coaches that i’m putting it all together and I have confidence going into this regular season game.”
