Eagles Insider Gives Insight on Lazor

The Dolphins offense is now under new management with the hiring of new offensive coordinator Bill Lazor . Formerly the Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach, Lazor helped inspire a tremendous second half of the 2013 season from Eagles QB Nick Foles. The University of Arizona product put up some gaudy numbers in his second NFL season, including 27 touchdowns, a 119.2 quarterback rating, and only two interceptions in 13 games (10 starts).
To get an inside look at the former Eagles quarterback coach and newly hired Fins OC, the Finsiders spoke with Philadelphia Eagles insider Dave Spadaro on Lazor’s tenure in Philly.
Spadaro spoke very highly of Lazor, saying that he made quite a positive impact on the Eagles’ high powered offense and trio of quarterbacks that played during the season.
“It’s a good hire, I really liked Bill a lot. I thought he was very meticulous and inspired a lot of confidence among a group of quarterbacks that changed,” said Spadaro. “All three quarterbacks saw significant playing time in 2013, and the Eagles ended up winning the NFC East with one of the best seasons offensively they’ve ever had.”
Lazor was part of an offensive coaching staff that led Philadelphia to the highest ranks of production in the league, with the Eagles racking up the 2nd most yardage per game (417.2), and the 4th most points per game (27.6). Spadaro thinks that Lazor should definitely get some credit for that, especially the breakout year of quarterback Nick Foles, and that Lazor will have a positive impact on Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
“I think he certainly deserves some of the credit. He worked very, very closely with Nick, and Nick is a kid that spent a lot of time away from the practice field and away from the game field studying film and sitting with Bill going through a lot of tape,” said Spadaro. “I think Bill deserves a lot of credit for that and I think Ryan Tannehill will be a better quarterback because of it.”
According to Spadaro, Lazor is not a fiery demonstrative coach. He’s more of a man of subtlety, a guy who’s more of a teacher than a preacher.
“He was not a tremendously demonstrative quarterback coach and I think the reason is understanding that you have a veteran (Michael Vick), a second year quarterback (Foles), and a rookie quarterback (Matt Barkley), and there was a tremendous amount of information and teaching that needed to go on.”
And he won’t be a guy who’ll give the media outrageous soundbites either.
“Bill is conservative in what he’s going to give you from a media standpoint. He’s not going to deal with hypotheticals, he’s not going to deal with speculation,” said Spadaro. “But he wants to build on a weekly basis, and that was kind of the whole mantra of Chip Kelly: Let’s win the day, let’s be better tomorrow than we were today.”
Now what exactly will the Fins offense look with Lazor in place? No one knows for sure, but Spadaro believes it could look a little like the high speed one that won the NFC East last year.
“If the offense resembles what the Eagles offense was, it’s up-tempo, it’s a spread offense. It’s maximizing the widths of the field and the length of the field,” said Spadaro. “The design of the offense was something different than I had ever seen. A lot of teams are going to now incorporate that, and I think this is one of those steps where the Chip Kelly coaching tree extends to Miami.”
