WR Damian Williams Excited To Showcase Versatility
Posted By Brian Coyle On April 28, 2014 @ 7:49 pm In Football | 7 Comments
With his versatility, Damian Williams had an edge over his competition coming out of the University of Southern California. Williams gave the school an advantage in the passing game and an edge when it came to the return game. In his final season in college, Williams averaged 14.7 yards per punt return and took two back for touchdowns. That was on top of his 70 catches, 1,010 yards receiving and six touchdowns in the passing game.
That resourcefulness helped him become a third-round pick of the Tennessee Titans in 2010. He became a valuable asset to the team in his first four seasons in the NFL, where he recorded 106 receptions for 1,313 yards and five touchdowns in 54 career games.
After joining the Dolphins earlier this year in free agency, Williams is looking to build on his previous success and become a big part of Miami, either in the return game or through the air.
In an interview with John Congemi of The Finsiders , Williams talked about his ability to play multiple roles on a team and how he’ll be able to make an impact from various positions on the field.
“The name of the game is however you can contribute to the team,” said Williams. “Obviously you want to make the team and whatever the situation may be for yourself, but just being able to go out there and contribute as many ways as possible … and I feel like I can help in the special teams.”
While he’s only made nine returns in his NFL career, Williams seems poised to once again make a big impact in that area like he did back in college.
“Returning is something that I’m passionate about,” said Williams. “I enjoy doing it. It’s another way to make a play. A lot of times you go out there at receiver, there’s limited amount of balls. You’ve got to share it. That’s just the nature of the position. When you get to go out there on special teams and be a return man, it’s kind of like all eyes on you. It’s your time to shine. It’s something I definitely enjoy doing. I’m looking forward to seeing how we do things around here.”
Williams picked the Dolphins not only because he felt it was the best fit for him, but also because the team embodied his type of mindset and his energy. He described the vibe around the ‘Fins as hungry, a team looking to break out from the pack and into the postseason in 2014.
“You always try to find the best situation for yourself and I think for me, it’s basically boiled down to opportunity,” said Williams. “I think that this situation here was best for me. It’s a young team, guys are really hungry and they look like they’re ready to go, and I’m excited.”
