Once Ryan Tannehill signed his contract and arrived at training camp, full focus could be diverted back to his on-field progression.
Specifically, how would the two-day absence affect his standing in the quarterback rotation?
Even if expectations were tempered a bit, nonetheless his performance in team drills would be heavily scrutinized.
The consensus? So far, so good.
Since he’s returned, Tannehill has split reps with David Garrard, Matt Moore and Pat Devlin, almost exclusively facing a mix of defensive reserves.
The Miami Dolphins are entering a new era.
From a football standpoint, the changes are fairly obvious: a brand new coaching staff, including Head Coach Joe Philbin, different schematic philosophies and even the addition of Ryan Tannehill, the first quarterback selected by the team in the first round since 1983.
But the team isn’t just changing on the field; it’s evolving off of it, too.
A large faction of NFL fans–the same people that believe a team will never win a Super Bowl at its home stadium, perhaps–think that signing up for HBO’s “Hard Knocks” is a death sentence.
No, none of the previous seven teams that were chronicled on the show have won the Super Bowl. It’s been more of a mixed bag, with three of the seven participants making it to the playoffs.
With the departure of Lex Hilliard, the Dolphins have looked to fortify their power back rotation this off-season.
The team announced on Wednesday that it met with former Titans fullback Ahmard Hall, who has spent his entire six-year career in Tennessee. According to The Palm Beach Post’s Ben Volin, they also visited with Jeff Link, a free agent fullback from the 2011 draft class.
Signing big-name free agents is just about the only way to placate fans’ desire for instant gratification during the offseason.
When you decide, instead, to build through the draft and are averse to overspending, it can be a slow process that’s hard to take stock of each step of the way.
NFL executives understand the position that Jeff Ireland is in–many of whom have faced the same issues during their tenures.
