With the start of training camp now just a couple of weeks away, it’s time to take a look at what will be some of the most hotly contested roster battles, beginning with the running backs.

The Dolphins currently have nine RB’s (seven halfbacks and two fullbacks) on their 90 man roster and to give you an idea of the reality of the situation: last year, Miami basically carried four men at this position.

Perhaps because of precedent and the unknown factor surrounding his arrival from Canada, Jerome Messam will be one of the most intriguing Dolphins to watch this summer.

Messam sat down with Jesse Agler to talk about his first impressions of the organization and the adjustments he’s had to make to play in the states.

For starters, he’s having to adapt to the infamous South Florida heat and humidity.

With the departure of Lex Hilliard, the Dolphins have looked to fortify their power back rotation this off-season.

The team announced on Wednesday that it met with former Titans fullback Ahmard Hall, who has spent his entire six-year career in Tennessee. According to The Palm Beach Post’s Ben Volin, they also visited with Jeff Link, a free agent fullback from the 2011 draft class.

The running back position is an interesting one. While the value of the franchise quarterback has increased exponentially in recent years, we’ve seen a bit of a shift as far as RB value goes. The term “dime a dozen” gets used a lot when discussing the guys that smash head-first into the trenches 20+ times a game. With so much emphasis on the passing game, teams are less and less likely to use high draft picks or big money on a RB, though there are some exceptions.

On Wednesday the Dolphins announced the signing of RB Jerome Messam. On Monday, the Finsiders talked with the voice of the Edmonton Eskimos Morley Scott; to gain insight on the type of player that Messam is, as reports surfaced that Messam would indeed sign with the Dolphins this off-season.
